The presentation focuses on how mentees (trainee teachers of maths) are supported in the facilitation of learning in a distinctive learning environment, namely that of mathematics for ESL classes for 16 to 18-year-olds within a department of English language teaching, and adult English and maths. The paper advocates that mentors who are specialists in mathematics in the post-16 sector need to develop better ESL awareness, including a more nuanced understanding of the language relating to mathematics, and to be able to anticipate specific types of numerical error in order to support their mentees in developing relevant mathematical pedagogical strategies.
